As a result, the soil cannot withstand any load. This phenomenon can have serious consequences for infrastructure and human life. It can occur in partially saturated or saturated soils.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This phenomenon was first<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/graphsearch.epfl.ch\/concept\/544776\/Soil-liquefaction\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> described by Allen Hazen<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1918 after the failure of the Calaveras Dam in California<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-929\" src=\"https:\/\/www.technostructacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-20.webp\" alt=\"Soil Liquefaction example Image\" width=\"1200\" height=\"655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.technostructacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-20.webp 1200w, https:\/\/www.technostructacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-20-300x164.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.technostructacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-20-1024x559.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.technostructacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-20-768x419.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.technostructacademy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/image-20-120x66.webp 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Causes of Soil Liquefaction<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An important factor in soil liquefaction is the increased pore water pressure in saturated soils. Under normal conditions, the soil particles are packed and the load is distributed among these particles. But in a saturated soil, the void is filled with water, and there is no air. When an earthquake occurs, external pressure is applied, and water in voids develops pore-water pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pore-water pressure and soil particles share the externally applied load. In some cases, the pore pressure is so high that the external force is uniformly distributed between the pore fluid and the soil particles, in which case the effective pressure is reduced to zero.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earthquakes shake the ground and disturb the compact\u00a0 soil. Excess pore-water pressure is generated by the sudden application of load (or vibration), which increases the voids in soil particles. The soil loses its strength and the stiffness of the soil reduces to zero. It behaves like liquid. The soil loses its ability to support the structures built on it, and the consequences can be devastating.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Effects of Soil Liquefaction<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soil Liquefaction has catastrophic effects, such as destabilising structures as buildings and bridges, causing them to overturn, sink, or collapse, endangering lives and even damaging <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.technostruct.com\/blog\/2020\/02\/17\/technologies-to-map-subsurface-infrastructure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subsurface infrastructure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as water and drainage drains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also leads to secondary hazards such as landslides and tsunamis.
